The Razorback to Mt Feathertop walk is the iconic hike in the Victorian Alps, offering breathtaking views, alpine landscapes, and an exhilarating journey along the ridgeline to Victoria’s second highest peak.
Possum Flat is behind the public shelter on the southern side of The Great Alpine Road opposite Howard’s Hut. This location provides a great introduction to hiking with your ‘little adventurers’. Both loops weave through snow gum woodlands and over gentle inclines. The Possum Flat Loop has a mid-way picnic table for a snacks break. The Dargo Loop passes through an Alpine Eco-Glamping site before arriving at the spectacular Dargo Lookout Picnic Shelter with great views over the Dargo River and High Plains. Take the Dargo Loop ski trail north to return.
One of Victoria’s icon walks, the 37km Falls-Hotham Alpine Crossing (FHAC) is a 3 day/2-night walk through the Alpine National Park, linking the resort villages of Falls Creek and Mt Hotham.
The Summit Walk is a short and scenic trail that offers a gentle introduction to the Mt Hotham Resort area, rewarding hikers with sweeping views of the surrounding alpine landscape. Ideal for families or those new to hiking, this walk is a great way to explore the beauty of the Alpine National Park.
The Mount Higginbotham Walk is a short yet rewarding trail offering fantastic views of the alpine landscape. Perfect for a leisurely hike to stretch the legs, this trail provides a peaceful escape in the heart Mt Hotham Alpine Resort. Its accessible length and picturesque vistas make it an excellent option for visitors seeking a quick yet memorable alpine experience. This trail is a short walk that travels past the Lindsay Salmon Memorial and reaches the summit where spectacular views can be found. To return either head back down the same way or travel along Higgi Drive which will bring you back to the start.
An easy-going loop walk behind the Alpine Base day shelter, affectionately known as 'The Moth' as it's design is based off the local Bogong Moth. Alpine Base is Hotham's home base for xc skiing and biathlon training in winter. The Biathlong trail follows the path of the winter biathlon athletes through the snow gums and back down part of the Brabralung trail, past Howards hut, to the day shelter. For kids: If you look closely at the stone work out the back of the building, you might spot some familiar shapes!
The Cobungra Ditch Walk is a fascinating historical trail that combines stunning alpine scenery with a journey into the region’s gold mining heritage. Following course of an abandoned water race that conveyed a stream of water for the hydraulic sluicing operations of the Cobungra Gold Mining Company, this walk offers a unique perspective on the Alpine National Park.
An picturesque walk down meandering grassy trails, through twisted snow gums and alpine wildflowers, with peaks of rolling views through clearings in the trees. Wild flowers will change each time you take this walk, from December through to Easter, with flowers peaking through January and February. Christmas Hill Trail leads you in a beautiful loop to Big Spur Picnic ground, a wide meadow-y clearing that comes alive once a year with yellow Victorian buttercups. There is a picnic shelter and a table out in the sun, both great for a lunch stop.
A great family walk cut through the snow gums on the back side on Christmas Hill, and connecting with the Christmas Hill and Biathlon trails. Follow the grassy trail through wild flowers and catch the view through the trees towards Brandy Creek. This trail can be picked up from Wire Plain, cross the road to the small green hut, Howards Hut, and take a stroll.
This trail is for experienced bushwalkers. Starting in Walhalla, VIC, the AAWT travels the length of the Australian Alps, and weaves it's way past the highest peaks in VIC, NSW and ACT, to Namagi National Park, ACT.
The Bon Accord Spur Walk is a challenging and rewarding hike between Mt Hotham and Harrietville. The trail takes you through stunning alpine landscapes, along the historic route used by early walkers and horse riders to Mt Hotham before the construction of the Great Alpine Road. This trail is ideal for experienced bushwalkers seeking an adventurous journey to the high country, with options for a longer route incorporating Mt Feathertop. By starting at Mt Hotham and walking down, you can finish your summer hike at the Joop's Jetty swimming hole in Harrietville (don't forget your bathers). One-way shuttles for hikers are available through Snowdog Transport.
This is one of Hotham’s shortest and most rewarding little alpine strolls — perfect for families, casual walkers, or anyone wanting a quick viewpoint without committing to a long hike. From the end of Davenport Drive, a short rocky ascent leads you to the summit of Little Mt Higginbotham, where you’ll be treated to beautiful southern views toward the Dargo High Plains and sweeping outlooks over the Hotham villages. Although brief, the walk provides open views across the Mt Hotham villages and to the south. The terrain includes some uneven and rocky sections, but the distance is short enough to be suitable for most walkers. A short, steep route with BIG rewards for the small amount of effort required.
The Mt Loch Summit Walk is an out and back hiking trail that offers panoramic views of the Victorian Alps and the surrounding landscape, making it a must-do for outdoor enthusiasts visiting Mt Hotham. This walk is perfect for those looking to experience the natural beauty of the area, reaching the highest point of Mt Loch which sits at an elevation of 1,837 meters. Great views can also be enjoyed by partially completing the walk.
The Brabralung Trail is a multi-use trail that offers a picturesque one-way journey between Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain, combining alpine vistas, snow gum forests, and a connection to the cultural and natural heritage of the region. This trail honours the traditional custodians of the land, with Aboriginal peoples having a shared history spanning many thousands of years in the alpine area. This ancient mountain pathway has panoramic views of the high country as well as numerous areas to rest and picnic along the way.
East Access Trail connects the Cobungra Ditch Walking Track to Big Spur Picnic Ground, and the Christmas Hill trails. At the top of the trail, Big Spur Picnic Point rewards hikers with sky high views. This track can create a shorter circuit for those walking the Cobungra Ditch.
The Huts Walk offers a captivating journey through the historical and natural landscapes of the Mt Hotham area. This trail is perfect for those looking to explore unique alpine environments while learning about the region’s European heritage, including the vital role of historic huts in Australia’s high country.
West Access Trail connects the Cobungra Ditch Walking Track to Big Spur Picnic Ground, and the Christmas Hill trails. At the top of the trail, Big Spur Picnic Point rewards hikers with sky high views. This track can create a shorter circuit for those walking the Cobungra Ditch.
