Trail Description
The Bon Accord Spur Walk when started in Harrietville follows the East Branch of the Ovens River for 5 km to its meeting with Washington Creek, where the steep ascent up Bon Accord Spur begins. The trail climbs continuously, reaching Bon Accord Hill (1,310 m) approximately 8.5 km into the hike.
Further along the track, the Bon Accord Hut ruins can be found at the 9.5 km mark, a reminder of the area’s rich history. The hut was originally built as a rest stop for travellers and pack horses. From this point, it’s another steep 2 km climb to the Razorback, followed by a final 500m to the Great Alpine Road.
Walkers can choose to return via the same route or extend the adventure by including the Razorback to Mt Feathertop walk, allowing an overnight stay at Federation Hut.
This track is physically demanding, with long steep sections, uneven terrain, and numerous steps, requiring a high level of fitness and bushwalking experience. The rewards include panoramic alpine views, solitude, and a connection to the area’s historical significance.
