The Huts Walk is a diverse route, winding through shady woodlands, damp gullies, and open high plains dotted with wildflowers in late summer. The walk connects three significant huts that reflect the history of Australia’s alpine region:
-
Spargo’s Hut
-
Derrick Hut
-
Built in 1967 by the Wangaratta Ski Club, this timber hut memorialises Charles Derrick, a cross-country skier who perished in a 1965 blizzard. It is nestled among ancient snow gums in a sheltered hollow on Swindler’s Spur.
-
Silver Brumby Hut
-
Originally constructed as a film set for The Silver Brumby (1992), the current replica was built in 2006-07. Situated in the Plains of Heaven by Swindler’s Creek, this hut is an excellent spot for a picnic.
The trail offers a mix of gradients and terrain. The steepest section is the ascent up Golden Point Spur from Swindler’s Creek, which is best tackled by starting at the Alpine Crossing Trailhead to avoid climbing this challenging incline. The rest of the walk is relatively flat, traversing open plains and regenerating snow gum forests.
The Huts Walk can also include a rewarding detour to the Mt Loch summit, offering spectacular panoramic views of the Victorian Alps and the iconic Mt Feathertop, making it a must for those seeking breathtaking vistas.
