Summer is a great time to explore Mt Hotham and the surrounding alpine region. A variety of tracks, trails and roads give you access to some of Australia’s best views, unique flora and fauna, and some of the region's richest history. We've got the hot tips on how to get the most out of your summer adventure. Book in some time to stretch your legs and take in the pure mountain air. Don't forget your camera!
1. Experience a sunset
Mt Hotham plays host to some of the most spectacular sunsets. At 1750m above sea level and on the top of a ridgeline, you can almost have a 360-degree view of the lapping mountain ranges. Plan your day to make the most of the sunset. For the hotspots, allow 15 - 30 minutes to walk to the top of Summit, or get in early for a beverage on the deck at The General.
2. Take a walk
There's something for everyone at Hotham. If you'd like to keep it local, you might like to explore Hotham's surrounds and learn a little about the history of the resort. Check out our track notes and take yourself off to explore our amazing tracks and trails.
Looking for more of a challenge? Hotham provides access to one of Victoria's iconic walks, the Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing (3-day hike each way), and the extremely popular Razorback hike from Diamantina Hut to Mt Feathertop (22km return). Stay on mountain at Hotham so you can start early and leave yourself plenty of time to enjoy the views.
If you'd like a new experience with a bit of help, Alpine Nature Experience runs an all-inclusive curated hike on the Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing. This is a 3-night adventure designed to maximise comfort while still being an active weekend getaway.
Remember to contact the Mount Hotham Alpine Resort Management Office on 03 5759 3550 and let us know your intentions, or leave a note in the intentions books at the trailheads, just in case.
3. Sleep in the tree tops
Yes, you read that correctly. Alpine Nature Experience can give you the experience of a lifetime at Hotham with their Eco-Glamping experience. Set above the ground and completely enclosed to house campers and their gear you can now make special memories at Hotham relaxing in comfort while watching the stars pass by.
Their eco-camp is set-up in the wilderness of Hotham. Everything is carried in and out by man-power to reduce the impact on the fragile alpine environment, and the whole set-up is completely off the grid and very sustainable. That doesn't mean you compromise on comfort. At the eco-camp, you'll find all the facilities you need to have a comfortable and memorable moment in nature. Alpine Nature Experience is accredited Sustainable Business and is a member of the 1% for the Planet initiative. Find out more here.
4. Enjoy a cool change
Seek out the freshness of the high country and enjoy a cool summer change. Mt Hotham tends to be about 10 degrees cooler than the valley temperature. Do remember to pack accordingly. Mt Hotham’s weather can change quickly in this extreme microclimate, and although it is fascinating to watch, it’s no fun if you get caught out.
Sunscreen, hat and walking shoes are a priority. It is always good to have a waterproof jacket and some warm pants because cool changes can arrive quickly during the day and frequently in the evening. Always remember to check local weather conditions!
5. Spend quality time with the kids
Hiking and cycling are great activities for the whole family, and you can do both at Hotham. Cycle our network of shared trails, or head down to the Dinner Plain Mountain Bike Park and give their 24km of trails a workout.
Afterwards, relax in the family-friendly Davenport area over a glass of wine at our fire pits while the kids enjoy the playground, trampoline and pump track. Or challenge the whole gang to a petanque competition.
6. Catch an event
