AM Summit Morning Walk

Discover the beauty of Mt Hotham with our introductory hike to the summit. This rewarding walk may be short, but it offers 360-degree views that make it truly unforgettable.
The highlight of the hike is reaching Mt Hotham's summit, where you'll find the iconic fire lookout tower and some of the most picturesque landscapes in the region—perfect for photography enthusiasts.
On the way, our expert guide will lead a short detour to the historic Baldy Gold Mine, sharing fascinating insights into Mt Hotham’s history, from its gold rush beginnings to its transformation into a beloved alpine destination.
PM Afternoon Walks
Two afternoon walks will be available on alternating weekends.
Spargo’s Hut Walk
Date: Saturday 4 January, Saturday 18 January, Saturday 1 February
Time: 1.30pm (3-4 hours)
Meeting point: Alpine Gateway
Distance: Approx 10km
Difficulty: Some bushwalking experience recommended
Head out along the Machinery Spur, with views of the Razorback ridge to your left and views back to Mt Hotham village on your right. Explore Bill Spargo's hut, originally built in the 1930's for as a shelter for gold prospecting. The humble hut is of historical significance and is listed on Victoria's State Heritage Register. You'll also follow along a section of the Australian Alps Walking Track, an iconic 655km-long trail that runs from Walhalla in Victoria, through NSW to the ACT.
Mount Loch and Derrick’s Hut Walk
Date: Saturday 11 January, Saturday 25 January
Time: 1.30pm (3-4 hours)
Meeting point: Alpine Gateway
Distance: Approx 11km
Difficulty: Some bushwalking experience recommended
Also beginning along the Machinery Spur, with its impressive views, and following part of the Australian Alps Walking Track, this walk will take you to the summit of Mt Loch, arguably Hotham's best 360-degree viewpoint. You'll also get to see part of Hotham's history, Derrick's Hut, named as a memorial for cross-country skier Charles Derrick, the hut is beautifully cared for by the Wangaratta Ski Club. The ski-wreath sculpture on the building front is well known by local hikers in the summer and skiers through the winter.
