Spring at Hotham - The most underrated time of the season

By Drew Jolowicz

Posted 2 September 2022

After an amazing winter with lots of fresh snow, plenty of blue-sky days and some awesome riding, it's time to look forward to maybe the most underrated part of the season – Spring!

It's hard to believe we're here already. Spring may be in full bloom in the valley; however, the snow season is far from done. Those in the know will attest to the fact that September can often produce some of the best skiing and snowboarding conditions for the whole year.

If you haven't had the chance to venture to the mountains this season it's not too late to book that long awaited trip. Here's some of the reasons why Hotham offers some of the best spring skiing and boarding in Australia.

Depth check:

After consistent snowfalls since the start of the season, Hotham is set up for an amazing Spring. Those who like to study the natural snow charts will be interested to know that it's not uncommon for the resort to reach its peak snow depth in and around the onset of Spring.

Combine this with Hotham's state-of-the-art snowmaking system topping up the cover throughout winter wherever possible, you can be assured of a strong snowpack well into Spring and book that late season trip with confidence.

Brush up on those skills:

First timers and those looking to improve their technique will love the soft forgiving nature of Spring snow. Guests can take advantage of longer warmer days, calmer weather, less crowds and smooth corduroy. It'll feel as though you have the piste all to yourself. Take advantage of wide-open groomed slopes and consider taking a lesson with Hotham's Ski and Ride School. Lessons should be booked online and in advance to ensure you don’t miss out.

Chase the sun for the best Spring turns:

Ease into the day, maybe sleep in a little or have that extra coffee and let the sun work its magic on the snow surface. Hotham's unique layout means there’s terrain on most aspects. Follow the sun's rays to find great turns all day long. Hit the Summit, Road Runner or Sundowner early for the most forgiving snow. Once the mercury begins to rise, venture over to Heavenly Valley, Gotcha, Keoghs and the Orchard in search of softer snow.

Sneaky Spring Pow!

Just because Spring has sprung doesn't mean the fresh snow has to end. Mother Nature always has the final say and it's not uncommon for powder snow to fall late in the season. If you're lucky enough to catch a September snowfall, enjoy fresh tracks for longer with less crowds and wide-open spaces.

Jump into Hotham Parks:

Soft snow means soft landings which are perfect for progression. If mid Winter’s firm landings aren't for you, Spring is the perfect time to break free and progress your park riding to the next level. For the rail riders be sure to check out the Basin Park for a wide variety of features. As the snow softens by mid-morning, air seekers should head up to the Summit Terrain Park where jump lines and rails will keep thrill seekers entertained all day.

Après drinks and Spring sunsets:

After a big day on the mountain, it's time to retreat to the The Bird Café & Bar to take in one of Hotham's spectacular Spring sunsets. From the balcony, enjoy a drink and watch the sun set over the resort lighting up the sky with the most brilliant alpenglow. Offering yummy food, coffee and craft beer, Epic Australia Pass holders also receive up to 15% off purchases. A great way to end the day!

Hotham 70th Retro Day:

Spring also means it's time for the Hotham 70th Retro Day. To celebrate 70 years of lifted operation, Hotham is taking it back to the 70s. Gear up in your most outrageous retro ski-gear for a chance to win prizes across the day. There is limited Hotham 70th merch, Oakley goggles and YETI colsters are up for grabs. Plus, you can party the afternoon away with Hotham local DJ Eddy from 4pm at The Bird and catch the fireworks after dark from the deck.

On piste vs off piste? In the resort or off the beaten track? It doesn't matter, it's Spring and there's something for everyone. Types of snow will vary from morning to afternoon. Hit the smooth corduroy early and let the sun work its magic before skiing off piste. The season at Hotham is far from done with some of the best days yet to come. Bring on Spring!
