Winter's rollercoaster (part 2)
It just goes to show you never know as the weirdness of an east coast low continues into its second day. After yesterday's wet one at some point in the early hours of the morning the temperature dropped just enough for the precipitation to turn to snow at higher elevations.
Overnight the low was -1 degree and currently it's -0.7 as we head for a top of 1 degree. There is still a moderate SSE wind gusting up to strong (70km/h), so again it'll be a day to check upper lift status before making any decisions.
At mid-mountain we've recorded 3cm of heavy dense snow overnight and it's currently still snowing lightly in the village. Until it gets light I'm unsure whether it's snowed all the way down to the bottom of the valley but I suspect it may get damper the lower you go.
With the dense new snow the best skiing and riding today will be first up this morning before any temperature rise on the groomed runs. Higher traffic areas will be the go as off piste could be challenging with the sticky new snow.
After today it looks like we're in for a few days of fairly settled weather heading into the weekend. Rug up for the windchill and have fun out there.
Cheers, Burner.
Backcountry Conditions
The conditions are variable in the backcountry. The southerly wind of a few days ago has stripped many of the exposed faces of the dry snow but there are still pockets of fresh to be found out there. Some solar aspects have moved into a melt-freeze cycle, but still not quite enough for good spring like turns as yet. Hunt around and you'll find fun turns just be careful of the highly variable conditions and thin snowpack in many areas. Take care out there.
There has been a little snow overnight and currently still snowing lightly. The groomers will asses whether it will be suitable to groom today
Issued: Thu 3 July, 06:43AM
The snow surface is still soft with a dusting of fresh on top. All north side trails groomed Tuesday 1st July S / C except the usual Ryans Folly, skate only. Trail to DP groomed Sunday 29th right through. A few wet spots near JB plain but good continuous cover.
Report from DP is that the Top trails to the sprinkler line are groomed.
Ski carefully on the artificial surface through the skier tunnel on your way to DP.
You can buy your bus ticket on the DP bus by using the QR code on the bus.
Best XC Skiing
The snow is not as wet as yesterday but still soft underfoot. It will be worth getting out there, however probably a classic rather than a skating day.
Cheers Bev.
