Snow 101: Top Tips & Tricks to Brush Up On

Posted 29 July 2022

For first-timers, or anyone who hasn’t visited in a while, planning is the key to making the most of the best snow season at Mt Hotham resort in 20 years.

There’s lots of information to navigate and boxes to tick and sometimes it can all be a little confusing. And that’s even before you arrive and strap on the skis!

Things like…what are chains? What sort of entry pass do I need? Where do I park my car? Where can I hire gear? What gear do I need? When I’m there, where do I go? Do I have to drive to the resort or are there alternatives?

So many questions. We get it!

This is why we’ve gathered some simple 'Snow 101' tips and insider tricks to help smooth the way for a fun and memorable getaway to Australia’s highest mountain resort this winter 2022. For starters, download this handy First Timers guide to Hotham.

Snow 101 - Plan and Book Ahead
It’s been a bumper season so far, so before you come, make sure all your ducks are aligned!
Consider a late season break when accommodation options are plentiful, rather than the popular weekends and school holidays.

Snow 101 - Resort Entry
All vehicles stopping at Mt Hotham need a resort entry permit. The electronic permit does not need to be printed – our toll point cameras scan your vehicle registration plates and match them to your permit (that’s why it is so important to get your rego right!). Resort entry permit fees contribute to the delivery of essential guest services around the mountain including parking and the use of the village buses, as well as contributing to ski patrol, and things like the running of waste management and environmental initiatives to make your visit comfortable, safe and sustainable.

Snow 101 - Other Ways to Arrive
If driving isn’t your thing, don’t worry, there are alternatives.  Whether you’re flying in from interstate, popping up from Melbourne or hopping over from Wangarattta, Bright or Harrietville there are regular shuttles. Or, you could fly! Mt Hotham has the highest commercial airport in Australia for commercial and private charter planes and helicopters so you can spend more time on the snow and less time getting here.

Snow 101 - Lifts and Gear
Lift tickets for one or many days and ski lessons to suit any age or skill level can all be pre-booked online and in advance. Get yourself and the crew kitted out in all the gear you’ll need for the day or the week - either down in the valley at Myrtleford, Bright or Harrietville, or at hire places on the mountain. Expert staff will guide you every step of the way.

Snow 101 - All You Need to Snow
Go to the Hotham website to find out everything you need on the mountain - from snow conditions and weather forecasts, to great places to eat and drink, ski, board and toboggan, as well as dance and maybe even sing!
