Help feed our Mountain Pygmy-Possums
Our beloved Bogong Moths have been getting lost on their migration to the mountains and they need your help!
Bogong Moths are an important food source for Mt Hotham’s endangered Mountain Pygmy-possums, which are only found at Mt Hotham and a couple of other alpine locations in southern Australia.
Each spring, Mountain Pygmy-possums wake up from their annual hibernation, hungry for nutritious Bogong Moths to eat so they can raise their young.
Sadly, Bogong Moth populations appear to have suffered a catastrophic decline in the past two years, which means there's simply not enough food for these tiny possums to raise their babies.
We need Australia's help finding these moths and guiding them to the possums!
Bogong Moths normally migrate from Queensland, NSW and western Victoria towards Mountain Pygmy-possum habitats. Sometimes they don’t reach the alpine areas, and one of the reasons scientists think this is happening is because bright lights from towns and cities may be luring and trapping the moths along their migration route.
Find out how to keep the Bogong Moths on track through reducing light pollution - join us for an online event in partnership with Zoos Victoria, Falls Creek, Mt Buller/Stirling, Mt Baw Baw and Lake Mountain.
