Hotham history in photos

We've been seeing some amazing photos come across the Hotham Herald desk. There are many people at Hotham who have been coming for many years - generations even! It's a blast to see some familiar areas looking completely different, showing that we have come a long way but the enjoyment remains the same.

One photo sent in by Julie Searant, who was a regular visitor to Hotham during the 1980s and 90s, shows the old poma that used to be in the Basin before the Audi Quattro chairlift was installed - you can see it on the old trail map (circa 1989-ish?) in the photo gallery above. The poma is being ridden by Kyle Middleton, 4 years old at the time and now Australia's top motorcycle Trials rider, having won the Open Solo Australian Championship five years in a row in 2017. He's accompanied in the photo by dad Ross and sister Jade.

Ewen Rankin also sent through some top photos. He's been skiing at Hotham since 1969, and his photos show a growing village with some excellent classic cars, including what we believe is Peter Zirknitzer's VW Beetle around 1972. In another of Ewen's photos you can see Zirky's being built, with Mount Higginbotham in the background, and the old unsealed road running through the middle of the village.

Thank you to both Julie and Ewen for sharing their photos with us. If you have any old photos of Hotham you'd like to share with us, please send them to media@mthotham.com.au
