Hotham is open

Posted 17 January 2019

Update Saturday 25 January 2020 - The Great Alpine Road (GAR) is now fully open all the way to Gippsland.

Please like and follow the Mt Hotham Alpine Resort Management Board's social media channels (see links at bottom of page) for information about what's happening at the moment on the mountain and in the surrounding regions.

The recent bushfires have caused disruption to traditional summer activities in Victoria’s High Country, but Mt Hotham is delighted to announce that it is reopening effective today, Friday 17 January 2020.

“We did have to close temporarily to ensure the safety of visitors and residents, but we are open to the public again and encourage people to consider a short break in the region,” said Bronwen Young, Senior Manager Guest Attraction at Mount Hotham Alpine Resort Management Board.

Thanks to a bit of luck and a lot of preparation by emergency services and locals, Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain remain unscathed by the fires.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the local CFA and Forest Fire Management Victoria staff who worked closely with the CFA and Melbourne Fire Brigade Strike Team on the front line of these fires, our local firefighters and staff, Mount Hotham Skiing Company, the Australian Defence Force and Victoria Police for deploying additional resources into the area to help maintain safety, and all the family and friends who support these wonderful people for their tireless efforts in protecting our amazing alpine environment,” said Ms Young

“Their commitment and passion for our beautiful location is appreciated beyond measure. Thanks also to the incredible team at the Genny (The General Store) at Mt Hotham who stayed to keep the firefighting team fed and refreshed.”

Come on up and enjoy Mt Hotham’s short local walks, our family-friendly activities and our hospitality. All walking tracks and trails within the resort are open, though there is no access to the Alpine National Park, which remains closed. Mt Hotham’s free guided bushwalks will recommence in March and are a great way to appreciate the local history and unique alpine ecosystem on the moutain.

MHARMB encourages all Victorians to support regional businesses over the coming months and years by booking a local holiday and enjoying all that the north east region and Gippsland have to offer.

Anyone intending to visit the region should check the Vic Emergency and EPA Air Watch sites for the latest information, as there is still fire activity in the area and smoke may cause health issues. Conditions can change rapidly and visitors should be vigilant. The status of roads in the area can be checked on the VicTraffic app or website.

*Please note that some areas of the Alpine National Park are still closed, for full details please refer to the Parks Victoria website.
