The reality is when you’re in the office asking Google for Australian holiday inspiration, a snow holiday is not necessarily on the top of the list. So often our search results are littered with iconic cities, sun kissed beaches or rugged deserts.
With the experts predicting one of the coldest snow seasons ever, there’s still time to explore the winter wonderlands of Australia ski resorts. In fact, we feel there are seven standout reasons why;
1. No wasted airport time or expensive international flights
Don’t break the bank balance on international flights, especially when travelling with kids in toe. By choosing to holiday at an Australian resort, you’ll also eliminate the need to waste precious time in airports. Don’t spend hours and days either side of your holiday travelling. Your time is too valuable and can be better spent frolicking through the snow.
2. Australia actually has mountains
When we think of Australia’s rugged and diverse landscape, we don’t necessarily equate this with mountains and snow. Victoria’s Alpine National Park and the New South Wales’ Main Range offer spectacular scenery year round. In winter months, snow resorts play host to some incredible and unique adventures. We even have the only resort in the southern hemisphere where the Hotham village is located on top of the mountain. This resort boasts picture perfect views for any type of snow lover from the first timer to advance rider.
3. It snows here too
Yes it really does, trust us. Deep low-pressure systems spiral up from the southern ocean and plaster our mountains with snow. With last season the best in 16 years and this season looking to match, the climate change nay-sayers are being kept very quiet. The current season had the best early snowfall since 2000 and shaping up as one not to miss.
4. Terrain and activities for everyone
Snow is one of the only sports that transcends generations allowing grandparents, parents and kids to participate together. It is not uncommon for kids to upstage all the adults, so be prepared for the ego to take a hit. From gentle and wide slopes to get the basics down to groomed trails for more advanced riders, ski resorts cater for all levels of ability.
Off the slopes there is plenty to keep the entertainment levels high. From famous afternoon après scenes and warming toes at spa retreats to kids’ music shows, there are memories at every snow-covered corner.
5. Powder skiing and snowboarding
But if adrenalin seeking activities are what you need, then resorts have you covered too. A common misconception is that you have to travel overseas to experience powder snow. This simply is not the case, with resorts receiving more than their fair share. Hotham is even regarded as being Australia’s ‘powder capital’ boasting gullies, bowls, glades, chutes and ridges across its valley.
6. The beauty of Australian snow gums
No-where else in the world can you experience the beauty of being amongst our native snow gums. The rugged and hardy species are found in Australia’s high country and come into their own after fresh snowfalls. There is no better sense of being energised when your feet crunch the underfoot snow as you weave through a sunken Snow Gums forests and breathe in the fresh, crisp alpine air.
7. Supporting local economies
By visiting an Australian resort, you also help support the local economies. Over 9,000 jobs are created in Victoria alone and contribute $817m in regional prosperity. This impact should not be understated to the regional employment and positive effect to businesses. Your dollar is important and makes an incredible difference to regional Australia.
There are just so many reasons that you have to visit a ski resort, but why be told. Go change that Google search and turn a summer escape into a winter wonderland holiday. You’ll be rewarded with space to breathe, insta-worthy albums and memories that last forever.
