The smartest way to hit the slopes at Hotham is by chartering your own aircraft, which flies when and where you want. You can fly directly from Albury to Dinner Plain in around half an hour with Smartair, who have been flying safely around the region since 1968.
Smartair offers you a range of charter options: Their business-class King Air is a luxurious 8-seater aircraft avaliable from $363per person (based on a group of 8) all inclusive for a day return charter. The King Air is fitted with de-icing equipment but all flights are of course weather dependent.
Alternatively, the twin-engined, 7-seater Piper Navajo can be chartered from $245 per person (based on a group of 7) all inclusive for a day return charter. Just call for pricing on any other requirements you might have such as pick-up a week after arrival.
Smartair will also arrange transfers for passengers to and from commercial flights, providing a seamless travel experience. Free parking is available at their Albury Airport base.
Smartair can also help you with urgent trips on or off the mountain, should an emergency arise. A Smartair twin-engine aircraft is only 30 minutes flight time away.
The Albury and Bathurst-based charter company can arrange the most suitable aircraft for your travel needs anywhere within Australia, and is happy to advise you and help you make the most of your precious holiday time.
Prices can vary on the time of season, the amount of people going and the length of the trip. For example, a 12-seater from Tooradin Airport (on the outskirts of Melbourne) costs approximately $350 per person which includes all landing costs and petrol. When you think of the amount of time your work, social or sporting group will be saving on a coach journey, the fun, spirit and exhilaration of flying into Australia's most accessible resort makes sense.
Plane sizes and types
Several companies specialise in charter flights. Different sized machines are available depending on the arrangements and size of the group they are catering to. All aircraft sizes have lots of room for transporting additional luggage such as ski and snowboard equipment, and with simpler check-in procedures on chartered flights it's much easier than flying on a commercial airline.
The great thing about flying into Hotham on a charter flight is that you can set your own schedule - YOU decide when the plane will leave the airport, and YOU decide when it will pick you up. All charter companies can accommodate either day trips or multiple night stays at the resort. Once again, there is a no hassle approach to flying from a light airport...no parking costs or waiting in terminals - you just drive up to the airport and go!Where do they take off from?
Melbourne based companies: Apart from the ultra affordable Lilydale Airport, Australasian Jets are based at Essendon and Tooradin Flying School at Tooradin. However all three companies are extremely flexible with regards to where you want to catch your plane from. These companies can pick passengers up from any one of the three airports in Melbourne (Essendon, Moorabbin or Tooradin) or the two in Geelong (Avalon and Ceres). Essendon has slightly higher usage fees than Moorabbin.
Sydney based companies: Adagold Aviation is based at Mascot airport, but can fly from any airport in Australia. All types of craft are offered, right up to Canadian made 36 seat Bombardier Dash-8's. These air-conditioned, pressurised, turbo-prop aircraft provide airline standard comfort without any of the schedule restrictions. A full in-flight food and beveridge service is available on request. Adagold Aviation supplies aircraft to the travel, corporate, government, military, mining and medical sectors and is now delighted to be associated with Mount Hotham.
Tradewinds Charter is another company that has been operating for a number of years. The operation has a full fleet of aircraft that can not only fly people from Sydney to Hotham direct but from interstate and even overseas to the resort. They are also very flexible with regard to flying out of rural and regional airports, and cater to both small and large groups.
Another Sydney based company is Curtis Aviation. This charter business was established 8 years ago and operates out of Camden airport, which is a 50 minute drive from Sydney. They own a fleet of five planes which can accommodate three to seven passengers.
JetCorp Australia provides a broad range of aircraft based in most major centres throughout Australia and have carried Presidents, Prime Ministers, Senior diplomats and leaders of the corporate world as passengers. JetCorp is capable of providing high quality, professional aviation services, pilots are well aware of the limitations and merits of Mt. Hotham Airport and which aircraft can be safely operated into the strip, summer and winter.
Canberra based companies: Corporate Air has been operating out of the nation's capital since 1972. They operate twin engine all weather aircraft that accommodate anywhere from 5 to 19 passengers. The journey direct to Hotham will only take 40 minutes, and free car parking is available for passengers at the terminal for the duration of their charter. If you live in the nation's capital then the slopes of Mount Hotham are no more than a small hop away!
Tasmanian based companies: Tasair are a Tasmanian based company that have been operating for 39 years. You can fly direct from Hobart direct to Hotham Airport, and the journey will take only 90 minutes.
