Advance Sled Dog Race 2006

A retired racer up for some sun and fun.

12 August 2006

It was a beautiful sunny day for this years Advance Sled Dog Challenge.  Unfortunately due to lack of snow, the race had to be scaled down considerably, but there was still lots of fun to be had.

The day started with the Lead Dog Challenge, which was just the lead dogs from each team pulling sled and trainer through a series of obstacles along a 100 metre loop track (with the igloo obstacle proving most popular as the place to stop and mark ones territory) .  I think the trainers ended up doing most of the work, as the lead dogs weren't used to pulling the sled without their fellow dog-mates egging them on behind.

Next on the agenda was the Dog Show (a back up event again created due to lack of snow).  All breeds, not only Huskies and Malamutes, were encouraged to enter and strut their stuff for a prize.

The final event was some role reversal.  It was now time for the trainers to step up to the mark and complete an obstacle course with dog sled attached behind.  Some very amusing moments I can tell you.

A truck load of dog food (literally) supplied by Advance, this years main sponsor, was on hand for the hungry competitors with each receiving a 25kg bag for their efforts. Not bad for a mornings work.

Congratulations to Altitude 5000 team for yet another successful day. After 13 years of running the Sled Dog Race, this is the first year that lack of snow has impeded the running of the event. Snow or no snow, I think all had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed their doggy day out.  For more photos click here.
