Helping our Pygmy Possum population

Helping our Pygmy Possum population

There has been an exciting discovery from the Pygmy Possum (Burramys parvus) captive breeding program run by Healsville Sanctuary in conjunction with Hotham Alpine Resort.

As reported in The Age recently, the latest breakthrough showed that the tiny alpine possums, listed as endangered in Victoria and critically endangered internationally, were capable of producing a litter fathered by two males.

Hotham is lucky to have the highest density and population recorded in the world and was therefore able to assist Healsville Sanctuary with this captive breeding program (which also happens to be the only one of its kind in Australia in breeding hybrid animals). This program was established for the explicit and primary purpose of re-establishing a genetically stronger population at Mount Buller (crossed with Hotham males) through release of captive breed stock to increase the population size.

The Mountain Pygmy Possum is endangered with the national population estimated at 3500. You can find out more about this fascinating alpine animal at Hotham by doing an easy Self Guided Eco Walk which includes a stop at the “Pygmy Possum Tunnel of Love”  which was constructed by Mt Hotham Resort Management to assist male Mountain Pygmy Possums to access female possums.
