Mother Nature turned on a spectacular display of pristine conditions for the second event of Hotham’s A La Carte in the Park 2011 series. The Pea Brain Soup Big Air was well represented by a strong Hotham contingency with entrants also travelling from Falls Creek, Myrtleford, Melbourne, Wagga Wagga, Tasmania, Bright, Wangarattaa and Sale. A total of 42 skiers and snowboarders hit the Big D Colosseum jumps and wowed the crowd with their gutsy Big Airs.
The Hotham Terrain Park Crew and Grooming Team built three kickers for the event – a 10 foot for the grommies (young riders), a 30 foot Medium jump and a 45 foot Big Air kicker. Spectators were not disappointed as a massive fireworks display set the sky and spirit alight for the finals. Local skier Jake Rast took home the gold in the Junior Men’s Ski category with a massive 720 while the Junior Men’s Snowboard division had a tie for first place between Hotham riders Callum Teague and Nik Gray.
Bailey Johnson, from Ringwood, threw down a huge Lincoln Loop to take gold in the Grommet Boys Ski division while the Grommet Boys Snowboard category saw Hotham rider Bailey Teague on the top podium for his impressive Mindy grab.
A strong team from Falls Creek helped amp up the competition with Terrain Park Institute head coach Jerome Lambert taking the gold in the Open Men’s Ski category with a huge 7 in the final. Fellow Falls Creek local Jade McJannett pulled an impressive Tail Grab to take first place in the Open Women’s Snowboard division, while Hotham’s top snowboard instructors battled it out in the Open Men’s Snowboard final with Joel Parle taking the gold for his huge 720 Tail Grab.
Clare Pelly placed first in the Junior Women’s Snowboard category with her clean Straight Airs. The judges were also impressed by grom Snowboarder Jack Christie from Wagga Wagga, who won a Spin to Win award for his 3s off the grom kicker. Zac Cunneen from Myrtleford also got a Judges choice award for his clean Big Airs as did Bill Hughes from Sale for his massive amplitude in each jump. Michael De Wildt of Fitzroy won the Judges Choice Snowboarder award for his huge Wildcat in the finals.
All placegetters were hooked up with gear from Electric and The General Store provided pizza vouchers for the Judges Choice awards.
Hotham will be dishing up Main Course in the 2011 A La Carte in the Park series on August 13 2011 in the Hot Ham Banked Slalom. All points from each event tally towards a Series Season winner in each category.
