ALPINE/MT HOTHAM – FIRE UPDATE - 2200 - 14TH DECEMBER 2006
The resort continues to be under no immediate threat.
A quick update, the fires are continuing to burn some 6 – 8kms distance NE of the resort with a red ‘loom’ visible through the smoke haze.
The break-out has now be confirmed at ‘The Twins’ behind St Bernard (some 8kms to the SW from the village) and is being closely monitored by the CFA units deployed to Hotham.
The weather change has arrived with some very light rainfall – the humidity has risen by 10% since 1700, but still remains low at 37%. Current wind strength is 28 kmh from the WNW gusting to above 47 kmh and is expected to continue to swing further to the south during the evening. Current temperature on mountain is 12’c
The roads are now closed to Hotham from both the Harrietville and Omeo sides (except for local and emergency vehicle traffic).
Up to date information about road closures in the area can be obtained from the MECC (Municipal Emergency Control Centre) in Bright on (03) 5755 0597. The Board strongly advises that the MECC be contacted prior to any plans to travel to the NE.
